A working person's guide to choosing an AI assistant
Benchmarks don't tell you much about a Tuesday afternoon. Here's how to test assistants against the work you actually do.
Independent picks · No pay-to-play
Ideas. Tools. Products. Opportunities. All in one place.
DOVELO is a guide to what's genuinely worth your money — books, gadgets, tools and AI picks, chosen carefully and explained honestly, alongside the things we build ourselves.
This week's picks
Not a catalogue — a shortlist. Each pick is here because we'd buy it again, and it comes off the list the week it stops deserving a place.
Books Editor's pick
The habit book people actually finish.
Most habit advice collapses the first busy week. This one is built for exactly that week — small systems, short chapters, and no demand that you become a different person by Tuesday.
Gadgets
Quiet, on demand.
Noise cancelling used to mean flagship prices. The current mid-range has closed the gap — this pair silences an open office or a bus commute without the $350 sting.
Tools
The keyboard your desk deserves.
A 75% layout keeps the keys you use and drops the ones you don't. This one is hot-swappable, so the first board you buy can evolve instead of being replaced.
AI
Meetings, remembered.
A card-sized recorder that turns conversations into searchable notes and summaries. Useful on day one; hard to give up once you stop taking notes by hand.
Books
Why smart people do odd things with money.
Nineteen short stories about how people actually behave with money. No formulas, no ticker symbols — just the patterns behind good and bad financial decisions.
Tools
Look like you meant it.
Built-in laptop cameras still look like 2014. A dedicated 4K webcam is the cheapest single upgrade to how you come across in every call and recording.
Some links may earn DOVELO a commission at no extra cost to you — how disclosure works. Prices move; always check the seller's page.
The method
Nothing on this page is paid placement.
We watch what's trending and pull out the few things worth taking seriously.
We put it to work — on real tasks, for long enough to find the annoying parts.
Against the obvious alternatives at the same price, not against nothing.
Only what we'd buy again. Picks drop off the week they stop earning it.
The idea
Find the tools, products and ideas worth your time. We test before we recommend, and we tell you what we didn't like.
See the picksTurn what you find into work. Guides, templates and software that shorten the distance between an idea and a finished thing.
See resourcesBuild skills, audiences and income over time. Opportunities show up more often for people who keep making things.

PlannedPrinciples
The internet has no shortage of recommendations. It's short on ones you can trust. These are the rules we hold ourselves to.
Before you buy
The things people ask before they trust a recommendation site. Short answers, no spin.
Sometimes, yes. Some links are affiliate links — if you buy through one, the seller may pay us a commission. Your price never changes, we label them where they appear, and commissions never decide what makes the list. The full policy is on our disclosure page.
Shortlist, use, compare, recommend — in that order. We use things on real work for long enough to find the annoying parts, and we compare them against the obvious alternatives at the same price. Nothing can pay its way onto the list.
Products change — firmware updates, quality drops, better rivals. When that happens the pick comes off the list, and if we got something wrong we say so in the letter rather than quietly editing the page.
No — when you buy through a link, the purchase happens with that seller, under their prices, shipping and returns policy. We recommend; they sell. Always check the seller's page before you order.
You shouldn't — yet. Judge us by the reasoning on each pick: we tell you who it's for, what stood out and what didn't. If that reasoning is useful twice, we've earned the third visit. The letter is the easiest way to check our track record over time.
One email every other Sunday. The picks that made the list, the ones that fell off, and an honest look at what we're building.
